Dining with Lesbians

A bowl of personal identity served with blueberry pie

About the Pen

Returning from a talk by Eve Ensler, I cannot sit down and pretend that there is only sunshine and cream on this planet.  If Eve started with nothing but a script, I will start with a blog.  I hope that the words in this blog will form an idea in you, an idea of equality and justice, an idea of hope and empowerment, and above all, an idea that will let you form your own words to become ideas in another bright mind.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to say anything about gender in a simple sentence because gender is as complicated as the universe and needs a bit more space than a nutshell.  I am female in biology (perhaps in genetics, too) and I identify myself with the female gender (strike that, I’ve just learnt about the term gender fluid and that feels most comfortable to me at the moment, maybe I’ll have to re-write this part in a few months).  I have an amazing partner of a good number of years and am perceived as a lesbian. I say perceived because I agree with the theory that sexual orientation is fluid like the batter of a cake and can tilt towards any direction depending on the heat.  So if there were to be a label for my identity, it would be termed with my partner’s name.

Growing up in a Chinese family, my mother and sisters have been wonderful with my partner and my mother had had the insight into my sexual preference before I did.  I now live between Hong Kong and Taiwan with former episodes of stay in Germany and the USA which has given me a hint of how lesbian communities vary from coast to coast.

Hey there, thank you so much for your nomination! I’m totally up to the challenge (and the lovely award to go with it!), I have an answer to that challenge already but just need to find time to sit down and write it out.

Thanks again (and interesting to know your thought about shrimp and football)!
